The story that occurred between the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the matter of the lower garment.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh: Among these is the story, also, that occurred between the Messenger (peace be upon him) and Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman. Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman was one of the most distinguished of the Companions of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and his specific companion in his secrets, the keeper of the Messenger’s (peace be upon him) secrets. He saw him one day with his lower garment long and hanging down, so he stopped him and placed his hand (peace and blessings be upon him) on the muscle of his leg. The narrator was uncertain whether he (peace be upon him) placed his hand on his own leg or on Hudhayfah’s leg? In any case, the matter is clear: he (peace be upon him) placed his hand on his leg or Hudhayfah’s leg on the muscle. He said to him:
This is the place for the lower garment; if it is long, there is no harm. هذا موضع الإزار ؛ فإن طالَ فلا بأس
, which is less than the best,
If it is long, the ankles have no right to the lower garment. فإن طال فلا حقَّ للكعبين في الإزار
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 64:367
. This is the text of the hadith of Hudhayfah:
the Izar has no right to (come to) the ankle لا حقَّ للكعبين في الإزار
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5329Sahih (Darussalam)
.
There is no doubt that some of the hadiths I referred to are more explicit in prohibition than this one. Those say:
Whatever extends below the ankles is in the Fire. فما طال تحت الكعبين ففي النار
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 64:392
; meaning: its wearer, without a doubt. So this description is on these levels, the first of which is the best, and the last is forbidden in Islam, and what is between them is a permissible matter.
