The secret of the fact that every religious innovation is misguidance; namely, that it falls under the category of legislation, which is the right of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He).

The Shaykh : And the secret—and here is the point of my previous indication that many do not notice—and the secret of the fact that every religious innovation, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, is truly misguidance, is that it falls under the category of legislation; legislation in the Shari'ah, in which no one has the right to legislate except the Lord of the worlds (Blessed and Exalted is He). So, if you pay attention to this point, you will then know why he (peace and blessings be upon him) stated that every religious innovation is in the Fire; meaning, its practitioner. This is because when the innovator legislates something from himself, it is as if he has made himself a partner with his Lord (Blessed and Exalted is He).
