The questioner : He says that a man underwent a surgical operation in the month of Ramadan six years ago and did not fast that month, and after this period had passed, he was unable to fast that month. What is the answer regarding his action?
The Shaykh : If he left making up the Ramadan that was obligatory upon him due to an excuse, such that he was weak after the operation and unable to make it up, then there is no blame on him; whenever he is able, he makes it up. If it was due to his negligence, then he is sinful, because it is not permissible for a person to delay making up Ramadan until the next Ramadan, as that came in the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who said:Sahih Muslim 1146a If the delay was without an excuse, then he must repent and he must hasten now to make it up. Some scholars have obligated upon him an expiation for each day because he delayed it without an excuse. If he does so, he has done well, and if he leaves it, meaning he does not feed, then there is no blame on him.
The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
