The questioner : A man who fasted some days in the month of Ramadan for a valid religious excuse: is it permissible for him to fast six days of the month of Shawwal before making up the days he fasted in Ramadan? Please answer my question.
The Shaykh : The six days do not suffice unless he has made up Ramadan completely. In other words, if he owes one day of Ramadan or more, he does not fast the six days until he makes up these days. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Ibn Majah 1716Sahih (Darussalam). It is well known that one who owes a make-up fast, even if it is only one day, is not said to have fasted Ramadan. Rather, it is said: he fasted Ramadan except for a little of it, or except for half of it, or a quarter of it, or something similar.
Based on this, we say to this man: First, make up what you owe from Ramadan, then fast six days of Shawwal.
