The questioner : I cannot stand for the night prayer, so I pray sitting down and bow while sitting because I am sometimes tired and sometimes unable to stand due to rheumatism in my knee joints, and sometimes I pray the obligatory prayer this way. Is this permissible?
The Shaykh : As for the voluntary prayer, the matter is broad in it, because standing is not a pillar in it nor obligatory. Rather, whoever prays sitting down gets half the reward of the one who stands, and his prayer is valid and accepted, but it is half the reward of the prayer of the one who stands. As for the obligatory prayer, it is not permissible for a person to pray sitting down unless he is unable to stand, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to 'Imran ibn Husayn:Sunan Abi Dawud 952Sahih (Al-Albani).
The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
