We read the Qur'an every day, one part (juz'). What is the ruling on the supplication we perform after finishing the part? Is this permissible in the Shari'ah or not?

The questioner : We read the Qur'an, and praise be to Allah, one part (juz') every day. What is the ruling on the supplication we perform after finishing the part? Is this permissible in the Shari'ah or not?

The Shaykh : Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says:
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.
[Al-Ahzab 33:21]
It is not part of the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he would supplicate when he finished reading. Rather, it is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that That 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud read to him from Surat al-Nisa'. When he reached the words of the Exalted: "So how will it be when We bring from every nation a witness and bring you as a witness over these?" the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is enough for you." I looked at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and saw his eyes overflowing with tears. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not supplicate after this, nor did 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud supplicate. However, if a person says a brief, simple supplication, such as saying: "Praise be to Allah, O Allah, accept from me," not as a sunnah (recommended practice) or as a fixed phrase to be said every time one reads, I hope there is no harm in it.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, and may Allah bless you and your knowledge, and benefit the Muslims through you.
