The questioner : How do we reconcile the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to the man who came to him asking about the religion? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned to him prayer, zakah, and fasting, and after he finished, the man said: Sunan Abi Dawud 391Sahih (Al-Albani) And what is reported as obligatory, where its omission is sinful, among the voluntary acts, such as the greeting of the mosque and others? May Allah reward you with good.
The Shaykh : We say that voluntary acts are never sinful to omit, and for this reason the man said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he mentioned the five prayers:Sunan an-Nasa'i 458Sahih (Darussalam) So nothing among the voluntary acts is ever obligatory, neither the greeting of the mosque nor anything else. Although some scholars said that the greeting of the mosque is obligatory, and likewise that the eclipse prayer is obligatory. And some scholars said: The eclipse prayer is a collective obligation, and this is the closest of the opinions to the truth. But there is nothing among the voluntary acts, indeed there is nothing among the prayers other than the five, that is obligatory, except by a cause, such as a vow, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih al-Bukhari 6696 But this is a concurrent cause that is the action of the person obligated. And with this, there is no problem with the hadith. But someone might say: There are other obligations besides what was mentioned in the hadith. The answer is either that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) knew from the condition of the man asking that the conditions of obligation for what was not mentioned were not met in him, or it can be said that this was before the obligation of what was not mentioned, because the obligations of the religion are not obligatory all at once, but they come according to the wisdom that requires them.
The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
I swear by Allah, I shall not add anything to this or fall short of it. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The man will be successful if he speaks truth.
والله لا أزيد على هذا ولا انقص. فقال له النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: أفلح إن صدقThe Shaykh : We say that voluntary acts are never sinful to omit, and for this reason the man said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he mentioned the five prayers:
Do I have to do anything else?' He said: 'No, unless you do it voluntarily.'
هل عليّ غيرها؟ قال: لا، إلا أن تطوعWhoever vows that he will be obedient to Allah, should remain obedient to Him
