When a person dies and is placed in his grave, does he feel it? Does he know that he has moved to the Hereafter? And does he remember his family and children?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : When a person dies and is placed in his grave, does he feel it? Does he know that he has moved to the Hereafter? And does he remember his family and children?

The Shaykh : As for his feeling that he has moved to the Hereafter, he feels it from the moment the Angel of Death comes to take his soul, and he knows that his soul has left his body by looking at it, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed:
When the soul is taken, the sight follows it. أن الروح إذا قبضت تبعها البصر
Sunan Ibn Majah 1454Sahih (Darussalam)
This is why the eyes of the deceased become fixed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon Abu Sulayman (may Allah be pleased with him) and his eyes were open, meaning they had opened, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) closed them and said:
When the soul is seized and leaves the body, the sight follows it.’ Some of Abu Salamah's family wept and wailed, whereupon the Messenger of Allah said to them, ‘Do not supplicate to Allah anything except that which is good for you (i.e. do not say anything which goes against you at that moment), because the angels (who are present at the time of death), say “Amin" (asking Allah to accept your invocation) to whatever you say.” Then he said, "O Allah! Forgive Abu Salamah, raise his status among (Your) rightly guided servants, make his grave spacious, and fill it with light for him, and be his successor in taking good care of his descendants whom he has left behind, (and make them pious).” إن الروح إذا قبض اتبعه البصر، ثم قال: اللهم اغفر لأبي سلمة ، وارفع درجته في المهديين، وافسح له في قبره، ونور له فيه، واخلفه في عقبه
Bulugh al-Maram 538
He made for him five great supplications:
O Allah! Forgive Abu Salamah, raise his status among (Your) rightly guided servants, make his grave spacious, and fill it with light for him, and be his successor in taking good care of his descendants whom he has left behind, (and make them pious). اللهم اغفر له، وارفع درجته في المهديين، وافسح له في قبره، ونور له فيه، واخلفه في عقبه
Bulugh al-Maram 538
And what was in this world, he attained, for Allah the Exalted replaced him in his descendants by the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married Umm Sulayman after her waiting period ended, and then the children of Abu Sulayman came under the care of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replaced him in his descendants in response to the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The conclusion is that the deceased knows that he has died and that he has moved to the Hereafter. As for whether he knows when he is placed in his grave or something similar to that, I do not know of any Sunnah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) regarding this, and it is among the matters of the unseen about which it is not permissible to be certain except by a text from the Book and the authentic Sunnah.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
