The reciter: Zuhayr ibn Harb narrated to me, Mu'awiya ibn 'Amr narrated to us, Abu Ishaq al-Fazari narrated to us, from Khalid al-Hadhdha', from Abu Qilabah, from Qabisa ibn Dhu'ayb, from Umm Salama, who said:
She said that God’s messenger came in to Abu Salama when his eyes were fixedly open. Closing them he said, “When the soul is taken the sight follows it.” Some of his family wept and wailed, so he said, “Do not supplicate for yourselves anything but good, for the angels say Amen to what you say.” He then said, “O God, forgive Abu Salama, raise his degree among those who are rightly guided, and grant him a succession in his descendants who remain. Forgive both us and him, Lord of the universe, make his grave spacious for him and grant him light in it.” Muslim transmitted it.

The Shaykh : It was the custom of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to visit the sick, so he visited Abu Salama (may Allah be pleased with him), and his eyes had opened, meaning they were wide open, so he closed them. Then he said: "When the soul is taken, the eyes follow it." So the people of his household made a commotion, because when he said "when it is taken," the family understood that he had died, so they cried out and wailed. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not pray for yourself anything but good
Sunan Abi Dawud 3118Sahih (Al-Albani)
, because in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, when one of them was struck by a calamity, one of them would say: "Woe to him, oh my woe," and the like of that. So he said:
Do not pray for yourself anything but good, for the angels utter Amin to what you say.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3118Sahih (Al-Albani)
, meaning they say "Ameen," and the angels are assigned to these situations.
Then he said:
O Allah, forgive Abu Salamah, raise his rank among those who are guided, and grant him a succession in his descendants who remain.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3118Sahih (Al-Albani)

Meaning among those who remain,
Forgive us and him, O Lord of the Universe, and make his grave spacious, and grant him light in it.
Sahih Muslim 920a

These are phrases of supplication that, if weighed against the world, would outweigh it! He said: "O Allah, forgive Abu Salama," asking Allah to forgive him, and the angels say "Ameen" to this supplication, because supplication in the face of calamities like this is answered by the angels saying "Ameen." "And raise his rank among the guided": meaning among their number. "And replace him with the best of his family": meaning be a successor for him in his family, meaning in his household, including his wife, children, and others.
And his saying: "Among those who remain": this was not found in some narrations, but there is no objection to it, meaning among those who remain from them.
,
Forgive us and him, O Lord of the Universe
Sahih Muslim 920a
It appears that this is an addition by some of the narrators, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) initially supplicated: "O Allah, forgive Abu Salama." It is possible that it is not an addition, and that it was a preparation for his saying: "Forgive us and him," so he included himself in the supplication.
"And make his grave spacious for him": meaning expand it for him, and "fill it with light for him." We know that some of these phrases were realized, which is that Allah replaced them with the best of his family. The rest is what we hope from Allah (Mighty and Majestic), that Allah answered this supplication of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for Abu Salama.
So benefits are derived from this: First: when a person dies, his eyes open, meaning they are wide open, as if he is looking at something, and he is looking at the soul. The soul of a person exits his body, and the eyes remain alive, looking at his soul as it has exited him. This has been witnessed by modern medicine, and that the life of the eyes remains after the soul exits the body.
And in it is also: that it is recommended to close the eyes of the deceased, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did so, and because that is more protective for his eyes from water entering them during washing, or soil during burial, or the like of that.
And among its benefits: that it is not disliked for the family of the deceased to make a commotion at his death.
