What is the ruling on the first adhan and the pre-Friday sunnah?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : A questioner asks about the pre-Friday sunnah...

The Shaykh : Oh, Professor Ahmad, the answer has already been given. There is no pre-Friday sunnah. What people do today is contrary to the Sunnah. The Sunnah is that when one enters the mosque, he prays at least two rak'ahs, which is the greeting of the mosque, and then he sits. If he wishes to add more, as we explained earlier, he may do as he pleases until the imam ascends the minbar. As for entering, praying the greeting, sitting, and then when he hears the first adhan, he gets up to pray this so-called sunnah—this was not the Sunnah in the time of the Prophethood, nor in the time of the Rightly Guided Caliphate. For at that time, there was only one adhan in the Prophet's Mosque and elsewhere. There was not two adhan with a gap in between for a prayer called the pre-Friday sunnah. The hadith came in Sahih al-Bukhari with its authentic chain from al-Sa'ib ibn Yazid, who said: "The adhan in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and in the time of Abu Bakr..." Do not make noise, Abu Khudr.

The questioner:
When the call is made for prayer on the day of Jumu'ah إذا نودي للصلاة من يوم الجمعة
What is the occasion? It is not the adhan.

The Shaykh : And I am saying what?

The questioner : Okay, if there is a second adhan.

The Shaykh : And I am saying iqamah. I am saying adhan. May Allah make us clear, if Allah wills. I am saying that Imam al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih from the hadith of al-Sa'ib ibn Yazid, who said: "The adhan in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and in the time of Abu Bakr and 'Umar, was one adhan." Speak in Arabic, Abu Khudr. One adhan, not al-Albani. Even you say there is a second adhan. He says al-Sa'ib ibn Yazid, a Companion from the young generation raised in obedience to Allah, because he says: "His family took him on Hajj with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he was seven years old. He performed Hajj at seven years old." And he is narrating to us this authentic hadith: "The adhan in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and in the time of Abu Bakr, and in the time of 'Umar, was one adhan." The mu'adhdhin calls the adhan when the khatib ascends the minbar.

The questioner : Is it the call, meaning?

The Shaykh : Call it whatever you like. I care about the facts. Its name is adhan. You call it a call. No problem, no problem, no problem. The adhan was one adhan when the khatib ascended the minbar. And the matter remained this way until 'Uthman ibn 'Affan established another adhan at what was called al-Zuray, outside the city. The scholars say this place was a gathering place and destination for merchants who would gather there on Friday. The building expanded in the time of 'Uthman, and the adhan of the Prophet's Mosque no longer reached the ears of the people there at al-Zuray. So he established the second adhan. This is called the second adhan considering the time of its legislation, but there was no interval between the two adhan such that the worshipper would pray two rak'ahs, let alone four rak'ahs as they do today. No. But when this innovation appeared, the Muslims continued with the 'Uthmanic adhan until the era of the Umayyad dynasty, and specifically in the time of Hisham ibn 'Abd al-Malik. When he became the Caliph of the Muslims, he introduced the second adhan into the mosque. People, due to their ignorance, assumed that this second adhan: First, it is an 'Uthmanic adhan. They wronged him. 'Uthman established the adhan at al-Zuray, meaning if there had been loudspeakers in the time of 'Uthman, he would have been spared this second adhan. He would have pulled a wire and one loudspeaker, and the matter would have been done. This is it. Yes, so they assumed that this is an 'Uthmanic adhan. Second: They assumed that there was free time between the two adhan, which means this is an error. Third: They assumed that it was in the mosque. The one who introduced it into the mosque was Hisham ibn 'Abd al-Malik. And if the Muslims, and praise be to Allah, believe in the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Friday sermon and in others:
and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. وخير الهدى هدى محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم
Sahih al-Bukhari 6098
Then it is obligatory for the Muslims to return to his Sunnah (peace and blessings be upon him), and as the people of knowledge said:
"And all good is in following those who came before, and all evil is in the innovation of those who came after."
So this is the Prophetic Sunnah: one adhan, and the mu'adhdhin calls the adhan when he sees the khatib on the minbar. There is no adhan other than this. If a person enters the mosque early in the first hour, he prays as much as he wishes, reads the Qur'an, sends blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). But when the khatib ascends the minbar, there is no prayer at all. Perhaps I have answered you, Mr. Ahmad.

The questioner : This is for Friday, but on days other than Friday, between the adhan and the iqamah, are there two rak'ahs?
