If you enter the mosque and the adhan is being broadcast over the radio and you are hearing it, is it better to pray the greeting of the mosque or to listen to the radio if the mu'adhdhin is at the beginning of the adhan and you are able to pray the greeting of the mosque?

The questioner : If you enter the mosque and the adhan is being broadcast over the radio and you are hearing it, is it better to pray the greeting of the mosque or to listen to the radio if the mu'adhdhin is at the beginning of the adhan and you are able to pray the greeting of the mosque?

The Shaykh : This requires a distinction. If you enter while the mu'adhdhin is calling the adhan for the Jumu'ah prayer, the adhan that comes before the imam, because the imam may have already entered and the mu'adhdhin has begun the adhan, then we say: hasten to pray the two rak'ahs and do not wait for the mu'adhdhin to finish, because your availability to listen to the khutbah is more important than following the mu'adhdhin, since listening to the khutbah is obligatory and responding to the mu'adhdhin is not obligatory. As for if the adhan is for any other prayer, it is better that you remain standing until you respond to the mu'adhdhin and make the known supplication after the adhan:
O Allah, the Lord of this complete call and of this prayer, which is going to be established! Give Muhammad Al-Wasila and Al-Fadila and raise him to Al-Maqam-al-Mahmud which You have promised him اللهم صلي على محمد، اللهم رب هذه الدعوة التامة والصلاة القائمة آت محمداً الوسيلة والفضيلة، وأبعثه مقاماً محموداً الذي وعدته إنك لا تخلف الميعاد
Sahih al-Bukhari 4719
Then after that, you pray the greeting of the mosque.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
