How does a good deed erase a bad deed? Does the bad deed go away and the good deed remain?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : He asks, "How does a good deed erase a bad deed? Does the bad deed go away and the good deed remain?"

The Shaykh : Yes, this is what Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said. Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds
[Hud 11:114]
Therefore, if a person does a good deed after a bad deed, it removes and erases it completely, especially if the good deed is repentance from that sin, for repentance wipes out what came before it. Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said:
Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
[Az-Zumar 39:53]
