Does repentance expiate riba?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Does repentance expiate riba?

The Shaykh : Repentance expiates everything; it demolishes what came before it, whether riba or otherwise. However, regarding riba, Allah the Exalted says:
But if you repent, you may have your principal وَإِنْ تُبْتُمْ فَلَكُمْ رُءُوسُ أَمْوَالِكُمْ
[Al-Baqarah 2:279]
This means that if a person repents from a transaction involving riba and the amount due has not yet been paid, he is entitled to nothing but the principal of his capital. For example, if a man gives a person one thousand riyals on the condition that it will become one thousand and two hundred after a year, this is riba. If Allah grants him mercy and he repents, he should take from his partner only the one thousand riyals, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
But if you repent, you may have your principal - [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged. وَإِنْ تُبْتُمْ فَلَكُمْ رُءُوسُ أَمْوَالِكُمْ لا تَظْلِمُونَ وَلا تُظْلَمُونَ
[Al-Baqarah 2:279]
. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you. The questioner, Abu 'Abdullah, says.
