If one prayed 'Asr without wudu' and did not remember until the Maghrib prayer, does he have to repeat 'Asr?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : ... No problem; regarding the question the brother asked a moment ago: a person prayed 'Asr assuming he was in a state of wudu', but when he prayed Maghrib, he remembered that he was not in a state of wudu' for the 'Asr prayer. Does he have to repeat the 'Asr prayer, perform wudu', and repeat the 'Asr prayer?

The Shaykh : Considering his statement (peace be upon him):
Allah has forgiven my nation for mistakes and forgetfulness, and what they are forced to do. وُضِعَ عن أمَّتي الخطأ والنسيان وما استُكرهوا عليه
Sunan Ibn Majah 2045Sahih (Darussalam)
, forgetfulness is an excuse, but I am now...

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : I, no. I am correcting myself in my answer to you. We distinguish between the one who remembers, and his question is also valid.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : If you allow me. His question is also valid in the scenario I will mention now. We distinguish between the one who remembers that he is not in a state of wudu' during the prayer, in which case he is excused. And as I told you just now, if he is able to perform wudu', he completes the prayer and builds upon it, and does not start over.

The questioner : He builds upon what he had?

The Shaykh : Yes. But if he remembers afterwards, after the prayer has ended, then he must renew the wudu' and repeat the prayer. And based on this, my previous answer, which changed completely, is that he must repeat the Maghrib prayer. Because he remembered the purity after he had finished it. So I say this with this detail, and perhaps this detail has become clear to you now. Why? Because we have a hadith from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and we have a report from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). The hadith is what I mentioned just now, because if he remembers the purity during the prayer, he purifies himself and builds upon what has passed. Because the hadith of Abu Bakrah al-Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him), as in "Sunan Abu Dawud": that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said the opening takbir one day for the Fajr prayer, then gestured to the praying people to remain as they were, then he entered the room and performed ghusl, and came back with his head dripping water, so he prayed with them, then he said to them:
I was defiled by a seminal emission and forgot إني كنت جُنُبًا فنسيت
Mishkat al-Masabih 1009, 1010
. So in this case, he builds upon it and does not start over.
The report of 'Umar: He prayed with the people as imam during his caliphate, and... 'Umar found in his garment the trace of wet dreams, so he said a word meaning that because of the abundance of eating oil in the house, he had what? A lot of water, so he performed ghusl and repeated the prayer, and he did not order those who prayed behind him to repeat the prayer. So, combining what 'Umar did—meaning he remembered after the prayer ended and repeated it—and this is, of course, we agree with that in the well-known hadith:
You must therefore follow my sunna and that of the rightly guided Caliphs عليكم بسُنَّتي وسنَّة الخلفاء الراشدين المهديِّين من بعدي
Mishkat al-Masabih 165Sahīh (Zubair `Aliza'i)
; so acting in accordance with both this authentic report and that authentic hadith, we arrive at the result I mentioned last: if he remembers during the prayer and is able to attain purity, he completes the prayer and builds upon what has passed, and if he remembers after the prayer, he must repeat the entire prayer.

The questioner : ... He completes the 'Isha' prayer, building upon what preceded of the 'Isha' prayer, and repeats the Maghrib prayer.

The Shaykh : Yes, indeed, it is this.

The questioner : This is what I answered, but without...

The Shaykh : Because this is our opinion from long ago, but—subhan Allah!—I was distracted just now in the answer.
