The questioner : This is a questioner, Sultan Abd al-Rahman Sakr, from Jeddah, who says: I have heard about the times when prayer is prohibited. What are they? Is prayer during these times forbidden? And what type of prayer is prohibited during those times?
The Shaykh : Yes. There are five times when prayer is prohibited: from the Fajr prayer until the sun rises; from its rising until it has risen the height of a spear; when it is standing in the middle of the day until it passes its zenith; after the 'Asr prayer until the time between it and sunset is about the length of a spear; and from that time until sunset. These are five times: two at the beginning of the day, two at the end of the day, and one in the middle. It is not permissible for a person to pray during these five times except for a prayer that has a cause, such as the greeting of the mosque, the sunnah of wudu', the prayer of istikharah if there is a matter that will be missed before the prohibition ends, and the like.
As for the obligatory prayers, there is no prohibition regarding them, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made the time for the forgotten obligatory prayer, when one remembers it, to be whenever one is, so one should pray it in whatever time it is. Thus, the times of prohibition are specific to voluntary prayers that have no cause. As for the obligatory prayers, there is no prohibition regarding them. And as for voluntary prayers that have a cause, there is no prohibition regarding them either. Yes.

Whoever sleeps through a prayer or forgets it, let him pray it when he remembers it. There is no expiation for it except that.
