The questioner : The questioner says: What are the times when prayer is prohibited? And what is the ruling if one forgets a prayer and remembers it during these times? Is prayer permissible in these times? May Allah reward you with good?

The Shaykh : The times when prayer is prohibited are five in detail and three in general. In general, they are three: from the Fajr prayer until the sun has risen the length of a spear, which is about a third of an hour or a quarter of an hour after it rises; and when it is standing until it passes its zenith, which is about ten minutes to seven minutes before the zenith; and from the 'Asr prayer until the sun sets. This is the general account. As for the detailed account: they are five: from the Fajr prayer until the sun rises; from the rising of the sun until it has risen the length of a spear; when it is standing until it passes its zenith; from the 'Asr prayer until the time between it and sunset is the length of a spear; and from that until sunset. I have detailed this division because of the hadith of 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
Three times in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited us from praying and from burying our dead: when the sun rises blazing until it has risen, meaning the length of a spear; and when it is standing until it passes its zenith, or he said: when the midday heat sets in; and when the sun inclines toward sunset until it sets.
. Therefore, in these three hours, or these three short times, the dead are not buried. If they bring the deceased to the cemetery and the sun has already risen, they do not bury him until it has risen the length of a spear. If they bring him to the cemetery at the time of the zenith, meaning about seven minutes or five minutes before the zenith, they do not bury him until it passes its zenith. If they bring him to the cemetery and the sun has only the length of a spear left before it sets, they do not bury him until it sets, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) prohibited burying the dead in these times.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
