The Shaykh’s suggestion to separate the zakah fund from the sadaqah fund.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. As for what follows, this is one of the tapes from the *Al-Huda wa al-Nur* series of scholarly lessons and legal rulings by our Shaykh, Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani (may Allah preserve him). We ask Allah to benefit everyone with it. And now, with tape number one hundred and seventy-four.

The questioner : If he built a mosque.

The Shaykh : No, do not repeat your words. Just this point about his father; what did I say about his father?

The questioner : It is more beneficial for his father.

The Shaykh : Which scenario?

The questioner : In the form he intended for his father, it is more beneficial than building a mosque. If he builds a mosque, it will be a share for his father, but less than the first form. Because when he builds with the intention of the mosque for his father, it is more beneficial for his father.

The Shaykh: Perfect.

The questioner : Now, which is more beneficial for that person: to intend it for his father, or like this?

The Shaykh : The answer to this has already been given. I said, and the reverse is the reverse. Did you hear me say "the reverse is the reverse"? That means, if he builds the mosque without intending it for his father, that is more beneficial for him. And if he intends it for his father, it is more beneficial for his father. Yes.

The questioner : Our Shaykh, regarding the recitation of the Qur'an, something was mentioned for the parents; one recites the Qur'an.

The Shaykh : Of course, this has already been discussed. Yes. Anything else?

The questioner : Regarding the topic of endowments and bequests, in the Society for the Revival of Heritage, we distributed a flyer calling people of good to donate to a project we named the "Ongoing Sadaqah Project." This is to invest these funds in supporting charitable projects, such as spending on students of knowledge, building schools, and so on. And of course, our call was for donations of sadaqah.

The Shaykh : And the funds of zakah.

The questioner : And the funds of zakah. The question has two parts regarding the funds of zakah: Do we have the right to invest them for the benefit of the poor?

The Shaykh : This is a repetition of what came before. May Allah reward you.

The questioner : I know this matter.

The Shaykh : Well, if there is nothing behind the veil, there is nothing behind it... (laughs)

The questioner : So, regarding the topic of sadaqah.

The Shaykh : How?

The questioner : Well, so zakah must be distributed in cash to the poor. Well, regarding the topic of sadaqah.

The Shaykh : I suggest that before we move to the topic of sadaqah in the broader sense, you must have a separation. You must have two funds.
Whoever comes to you with zakah money, you put it in the zakah fund, and you deliver this to those entitled to zakah, those mentioned in the Noble Qur'an. And the second fund is for general sadaqah. If this is the reality, then praise be to Allah. And now you move to the topic of sadaqah...

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : He says that this separation, which you are implementing in practice, should be publicized so that people know the legal ruling first. Then, if they give sadaqah, it is placed in the sadaqah fund, and if they give zakah, it is placed in the zakah fund. Without a doubt, in the Muslim world, there is what is pleasing and what is not, what is valid and what is not. And in the Muslim world, there are those who agree with us and those who do not. There may be a man like me who does not see the disposal of zakah money in other general charitable projects as permissible. So when I learn that there is a society that collects zakah and sadaqah and spends it in a way I do not see as prescribed, what do I do? I shrink back. Either I withhold my money from myself and do not pay zakah at all, God forbid, or I take charge of the distribution myself, in a way that may lack wisdom or carefulness or the like. So if I know that there is an Islamic society that carries out this precise scientific distinction, this encourages me and those like me to bring my zakah to this zakah fund, because it will be delivered to the poor, hand to hand. This has a double benefit: a benefit in terms of enlightenment and detailing the legal ruling, and a benefit in terms of reassuring those who pay zakah about their money, that we are with you, and your money will be spent in what is obligatory for it to be spent in. Yes.
