What is the correct interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And there is no one among you but will pass over it”?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Allah the Exalted said:
And there is none of you except he will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed.
[Maryam 19:71]
. What is the most correct opinion regarding the interpretation of “passing over” (al-wurud)?

The Shaykh : The most correct opinion is that it means entering, and this is supported by some authentic texts. Among them is what is in Sahih Muslim, where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
No one of those who took the oath of allegiance under the tree will go to hell.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4653Sahih (Al-Albani)
. Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked: “How is that, O Messenger of Allah, when Allah Mighty and Majestic says:
And there is none of you except he will come to it. This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed.
[Maryam 19:71]
?” He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: اقرئي ما بعدها : ثُمَّ نُنَجِّي الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْا وَنَذَرُ الظَّالِمِينَ فِيهَا جِثِيّاً Read what comes after it: Then We will save those who feared Allah, and We will leave the wrongdoers therein prostrate.. The point of the hadith is very clear: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that none of the people of the Tree (the Pledge of Allegiance) would enter the Fire. This caused confusion for Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), because her understanding of the previous verse was based on its apparent meaning:
And there is none of you except he will come to it
[Maryam 19:71]
, meaning: entering it. Thus, her understanding of the verse did not align with the explicit statement of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) that none of the people of the Tree would enter the Fire. Her understanding was correct regarding the first part of the verse, because she understood the verse to mean:
And there is none of you except he will come to it
[Maryam 19:71]
, meaning: entering it. So how can this be reconciled with his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:
No one of those who took the oath of allegiance under the tree will go to hell.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4653Sahih (Al-Albani)
?
The Shaykh : Here we find that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) affirmed Hafsah’s (may Allah be pleased with her) understanding of “passing over” as meaning “entering,” but he removed the confusion for her by completing the verse:
Then We will save those who feared Allah and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees.
[Maryam 19:72]
. Therefore, entering is a reality that must occur for all people, both the righteous and the wicked. However, there is a fundamental difference between the righteous and the wicked: the righteous enter it by passing through, while the wicked enter it by falling in and being punished.
The Shaykh : This meaning is confirmed by the hadith narrated in the two Sahihs from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
There are no two Muslims—meaning a couple—whose three children die before reaching the age of accountability, except that the Fire will not touch them, except by passing through.
. “The breaking of the oath” refers to the previous verse:
And there is none of you except he will come to it
[Maryam 19:71]
. Thus, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) testifies in this hadith that among the virtues of the couple who are patient with the decree of Allah Mighty and Majestic, when three of their children who have not reached the age of accountability die, if they are pleased with that, the Fire will not touch them except by passing through, just as in the hadith of Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her). This is the correct opinion, and one should not hesitate to adopt it in interpreting this noble verse.
The Shaykh : There is a very explicit hadith, but its chain of narration is weak, even though al-Hakim narrated it in al-Mustadrak, and he is known for being lenient in his narration in this book. He narrates it from Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari: أن رجلاً لقيه في الطريق، فقال له : حضرنا مجلساً فجاءت هذه الآية : وَإِنْ مِنْكُمْ إِلَّا وَارِدُهَا ، فاختلف أهل المجلس في تفسيرها على ثلاثة أقوال A man met him on the road and said to him: We attended a gathering, and this verse came up: “And there is no one among you but will pass over it.” The people of the gathering differed in its interpretation into three opinions.. When Jabir heard that from him, and he was asking him about the meaning of the verse as a Companion of the Prophet, what he did—assuming the narration is authentic—was put his two fingers in his ears and say: “May they be deaf if I did not hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) say:
No righteous person or sinner will remain but will enter it, then it will become coolness and peace, just as it was for Ibrahim.
.” This hadith is weak in its structure, but its meaning is correct, as attested by the two previous hadiths.
The Shaykh : other than it.
