If impurity affects a Muslim's garment and he does not know the location of the impurity, what should he do?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The brother in the question asks: Is there a report that if impurity affects a Muslim's clothing, he should sprinkle water on it, without knowing the exact location of the impurity or the specific spot of the impurity?

The Shaykh : To my knowledge, nothing has been reported in the Sunnah regarding this question. Rather, this is something some scholars may say, and it is a necessity. If impurity affects a garment and the owner of the garment does not know its location, he must strive and rely on his predominant suspicion regarding the location of the impurity. For example, if this cloak is affected by impurity, he must investigate and strive, as impurity usually affects the lower part of the garment. If it does not occur to him that it affected the shoulder, then this is a section we have disregarded. What remains, for example, is that it is in this corner or in another place. He continues to investigate to determine the location of the impurity as accurately as possible. After that, he proceeds to wash it. If we assume the worst-case scenario, that he did not predominantly suspect the impurity to be in a specific location—whether lower or higher, middle or below, or above—then in that case, he must wash the entire garment completely and thoroughly. Because in this situation, he is certain that he has removed the impurity from his garment. This is the opinion of the scholars and jurists, and it is a necessity. As for there being a text, there is no text regarding this, to my knowledge. Yes.

The questioner : Sprinkling...

The Shaykh : Excuse me, yes, you did well in pointing that out, even if there is something in the pointing out. Yes. It should have been remembered that the question was about what? It was about sprinkling. Sprinkling has not been reported except for the urine of a small child, or for what may be in the garment of pre-seminal fluid, in which case sprinkling is sufficient. As for impurities in general, sprinkling is not sufficient for them; rather, washing is necessary until the substance of the impurity is removed, if it is apparent, or if it is not apparent, it is washed three times. Sprinkling in a question like this is not permissible; rather, washing is necessary. Yes.
