The questioner : The questioner is Egyptian and works in Jordan. He says: A dispute and quarrel occurred between me and a person, and after that a person from among the brothers reconciled us, and after that we did not speak. When he passed by me and I was alone, he did not greet me and did not offer me the salam, so I returned the same to him. And when I passed by in a group, he did not greet me. What is the ruling on that, and what is the ruling on this boycott? May you be rewarded.
The Shaykh : Boycotting between Muslims is forbidden. It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that he prohibited boycotting and ordered us to be servants of Allah, brothers. He said (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 2560a.
It is obligatory for the questioner and his companion to remove what is between them of boycotting, hatred, and enmity, and to repent to Allah the Exalted from that. The best of them is the one who initiates the greeting. If it happens that one of them persists in his boycott, then the best of them is the one who initiates the greeting. Let him initiate the greeting to his brother and offer him the salam. If he returns the greeting, that is what is required, and it is a blessing from Allah upon them both. If he does not return the greeting, he has incurred sin, and the one who greeted has gained, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:. Yes.
The questioner : May Allah reward you, O Shaykh.

It is not permissible for a Muslim to have estranged relations with his brother beyond three nights, the one turning one way and the other turning the other way when they meet; the better of the two is one who is the first to give a greeting.
