The meaning of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “The Jews split apart.”

The Shaykh : In reality, this is the hadith of the sects. It should be the methodology of every Muslim, especially in this time when groups and sects have multiplied, and each of them claims to be upon the truth. I see it obligatory upon me to expand a little on the hadith of the sects, because it is impossible for all the Islamic groups existing today in the Islamic lands to be in the Fire; that is impossible. Likewise, it is completely impossible for all of them to be in Paradise. This is the opposite of that, and that is the opposite of this, and all of it is impossible in light of the Shari'ah. Why? Because Allah (Mighty and Majestic) mentioned in the Noble Qur'an legal realities that no Muslim has any room to deny. Among these realities are: [Al-A'raf 7:187] [Al-Baqarah 2:243] [Saba 34:13] [Yusuf 12:106] So we see in the texts of the Qur'an, in addition to the established hadiths from the Messenger (peace be upon him)—whose function is to clarify what is in the Qur'an—we see in all these texts that the majority is always the one who is blamed, and the minority is the one who is praised. This is from one aspect. From another aspect, we see our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) forbidding division in the religion and making that a characteristic and nature of the polytheists. So the Lord of the Worlds said: [Ar-Rum 30:31-32] So division is blamed in the Qur'an. Indeed, the Messenger (peace be upon him) clarified that with the most complete explanation. He (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) said in the hadith of the sects that I referred to earlier, and now we mention it in its entirety, exactly as it came in Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Musnad Ahmad, and other books of the Sunnah, from a group of the Companions, among them Abu Hurayrah, Mu'awiyah, Anas ibn Malik, and others from the Companions. He (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) said: This is the group from which it is not permissible to depart, and the one who departs from it is the one who rightly deserves that severe ruling, which is that his blood becomes lawful because of his separation from the group. What is this group? Its interpretation has come by allusion in the Qur'an and by clarification

و لكن أكثر الناس لا يشكرونAnd few of My servants are grateful.
و قليلٌ من عبادي الشكورAnd most of them believe not in Allah except while they associate others with Him.
وما يؤمن أكثرهم بالله إلا و هم مشركونand do not be of those who associate others with Allah (32) [Or] of those who have divided their religion and become sects, every faction rejoicing in what it has.
و لا تكونوا من المشركين من الذين فرقوا دينهم وكانوا شيعا كل حزب بما لديهم فرحونThe Jews split into seventy-one sects, and the Christians split into seventy-two sects, and my Ummah will split into seventy-three sects, all of them in the Fire except one. They said: Who are they, O Messenger of Allah? He said: It is the group (al-Jama'ah).
