Some people mention a rule, which is: if there is no indication in the hadith that affirms an attribute, the matter is taken in its literal sense. They gave as an example of this the hadith:

The questioner: Well, there is also a creedal issue. Some people established a rule in the creed that if there is no indication in the attribute or in the hadith that affirms an attribute, the matter is taken in its literal sense. For example, from the hadith of running
And whoever comes to Me walking, I will come to him running ومن جاءني يمشي جئته هرولة
Sahih Ibn Hibban 6:21
at the beginning of the hadith, there is an indication
Whoever draws near to Me من تقرب إلىّ
They say that this indication clarifies that the running is not literal, meaning that we do not say that Allah runs. We do not say that Allah runs. Do you agree with this rule first? And second, what is the meaning of running, or do you affirm the attribute of running for Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He)?

The Shaykh: I do not know this detail that you are conveying. I affirm what the Messenger affirmed in the hadith, and I do not derive from it an action or a name beyond what came to us in this hadith. I do not add to it.

The questioner: We understand it in light of the other hadith
My servant, I was hungry and you did not feed Me, I was ill and you did not visit Me. He said: How can I visit You, and You are the Lord of the worlds? عبدي جعت فلم تطعمني ، مرضت فلم تعدني فقال كيف أعودك و أنت رب العالمين
In the continuation of the hadith, it clarifies that this does not affirm the attribute of illness or hunger for Allah (Mighty and Majestic).

The Shaykh: Of course, because this can only be a deficiency.

The questioner: Yes, and so is the running.

The Shaykh: But the running, like coming and descending, are attributes for which we do not have anything that negates them when we specify them for Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Because these attributes are not attributes of deficiency, so we do not immediately rush to negate them, like food, drink, illness, and the like. I find a difference between the two matters. But I do not expand on the topic of running, and I do not add more than what came in the hadith. And I do not mention what the Shaykh of the Salafis said on this issue, who is the Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him). Perhaps our brothers present can mention something of that. The words of Ibn Taymiyyah regarding this hadith are specific.

Another questioner: Ibn al-Qayyim

The Shaykh : There is no harm.

Another questioner: Ibn al-Qayyim in *Madaraj al-Salikin*

The Shaykh : Yes.

Another questioner: When a person reads their interpretation by meaning, he thinks that they did not mention the attribute.

The Shaykh : Like this.

The questioner: Yes, and that they ... on the attribute, but they clarify the meaning of this attribute in a manner befitting the created and in a manner befitting the Creator.

The Shaykh: All attributes are like this.

The questioner: This is a general statement. Good.
When he draws near Me by the span of his hand. I draw near him by the length of a cubit من تقرب إلىّ شبراً تقربت إليه ذراعا
Sahih Muslim 2675h
Drawing near here is by the essence, and not by what?

The Shaykh: The drawing near of the servant is by worship and obedience.

The questioner: And the drawing near of the Lord of Majesty and Glory

The Shaykh: By what is it?

The questioner: By what? By the reward.

The Shaykh: Well, but this does not negate the other.

The questioner: And whoever comes walking, do we walk to Allah?

The Shaykh: There is no need for this, as it is a repetition of the previous meaning. There is no need for the sequence.

The questioner: Meaning, the summary is that you affirm the attribute of running for Allah?

The Shaykh: Yes, and we do not add to this. We do not derive and we do not expand.

Another questioner: If there is interpretation in the hadith, it is in the interpretation of the servant, not for the attribute of the Lord.

The Shaykh: It is just this.
