Is the term (al-'arous) applied to both the man and the woman, or to only one of them?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The first question: The word 'arous is, of course, a linguistic term we know, but the current custom is that al-'arous refers to the woman and is not applied to both the man and the woman in custom. So, given that the custom has contradicted this, is it not possible for us to refrain from using this term for the man?

The Shaykh : Outside, yes; inside, no.
Al-Halabi : A very good word, Shaykh. Let our brother Abu Ahmad be clarified with a bit more detail.

The Shaykh : That is, we have a principle that one should speak to people according to the capacity of their minds. Here, when Abu Abdullah applied the term to his neighbor, who is the groom in the general custom because his wife is the bride, when he called him the bride, no one understood from him what he meant, which is that he is the husband of the bride. Is that clear?

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : But if a person says, "The bride has come from outside," what will he be understood to mean?

The questioner : He praised a woman.

The Shaykh : There, we do not use this word. So, if the word is placed in its appropriate context, that is what is obligatory. And I am as certain as certainty itself that one, two, three, or more of our brothers present here were previously unaware of this linguistic reality, but when this linguistic reality was used, Zayd, Bakr, and Amr became, praise be to Allah, Muhammad, Ahmad, and Abu Ahmad, participating in knowing what this language is that had been neglected. So, it is necessary to be specific. And perhaps Abu Ahmad understood the specification; is that not the case, Abu al-Harith?
Al-Halabi : Yes, may Allah reward you with good, our Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Yes, this is the first question.
