Does the hadith of (the Split) apply to the sects?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Is it possible, our Shaykh, to say that the existing sects fall under the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) hadith that “My Ummah will split into seventy-three sects”?

The Shaykh : We have answered this question repeatedly. We say that any sect that adopts a methodology other than the methodology of the Book and the Sunnah, and the methodology of the righteous Salaf, is undoubtedly included in the general category of those sects. However, if a sect adopts this methodology but deviates in understanding or behavior in one aspect or another, this does not exclude it from being part of the saved sect, because we do not imagine that any Muslim, no matter how sound his creed and methodology, is infallible. Deviating from adhering to every detail of the Islamic Shari'ah is something no one is safe from, but the important thing is that one’s methodology and creed are sound. Is that clear?

The questioner : May Allah reward you.
