Ibrahim Shuqqa's comment on those who apply Qur'anic verses to scientific facts and theories

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Abu Malik: In response to your words, this statement is complete, but it may require mentioning a necessary issue here. It is that these people our Shaykh referred to, these interpreters or those who interpret the Book of Allah, claim that verses are applied to facts and scientific theories. Naturally, this means that if the fact is falsified or its failure becomes apparent—the scientific fact, and naturally they do not call it a scientific fact until there have been many experiments—yet even after it is called a fact, it is subject to error, deficiency, and disappearance. Therefore, from this, we say that the danger in this claim, that a verse is applied to a scientific fact, is that this is an error and contains slander, sin, and doubt. But what our Shaykh pointed to is that scientific facts and scientific theories are applied to the Qur'anic verses. So whatever of them is true or aligns with the apparent meaning of the verses, we affirm its truth. And whatever does not align with the apparent meaning of these verses, we reject it, because that makes rejection easier, since it is the fact and the scientific theory that is being rejected.
