The soul is inclined to evil. I tried to restrain my soul and accustom it to little, and not give it everything, but I heard that the soul will be held accountable by its owner on the Day of Resurrection if he deprives it of something in this world. How do I protect my soul?

The questioner : The soul is inclined to evil. I tried to restrain my soul and accustom it to little, and not give it everything, but I heard that the soul will be held accountable by its owner on the Day of Resurrection if he deprives it of something in this world. How do I protect my soul?
The Shaykh : It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said to 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with them both):Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2413Sahih (Darussalam) Therefore, it is not permissible for a person to overburden himself, even in the worship of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), because the reason for this hadith was that 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "I will fast forever, and I will stand in prayer all night as long as I live" So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: He said: Yes. Then he said to him: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2413Sahih (Darussalam) And he ordered him to fast and break the fast, and to stand in prayer and sleep. It is not permissible for a person to worship Allah by leaving what Allah has made lawful for him, for this is extremism in religion and excessive depth in it. Rather, eat what Allah has permitted for you, in obedience to the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Al-Baqarah 2:172].
The questioner : May Allah reward you, O Shaykh. This is a questioner named 'Abdullah, and he says.
The Shaykh : It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said to 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with them both):
Indeed your self has a right upon you
إن لنفسك عليك حقاًDid you say this?
أنت قلت هذا؟Indeed your self has a right upon you
إن لنفسك عليك حقاًO you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.
