The Meaning of Allah’s Saying: “Indeed, every soul has a guardian over it” and its grammatical parsing

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We return to the surah.
There is no soul but that it has over it a protector. إن كل نفس لما عليها حافظ
[At-Tariq 86:4]
I am asking the grammarians among you to parse this sentence. May Allah guide you. Yes.
There is no soul but that it has over it a protector. إن كل نفس لما عليها حافظ
[At-Tariq 86:4]
“Inna” means “ma” (no), and “lima” means “illa” (except). So the estimated meaning of the verse is: “No soul is except that it has a guardian over it.” Because when “inna” is followed by “illa,” it is for negation, as Allah the Exalted said:
This is not but clear magic. إن هذا إلا سحر مبين
You [believers] are but falsifiers." إن أنتم إلا مبطلون
[Ar-Rum 30:58]
and similar verses, which are numerous. So when “illa” comes after “inna,” what is it? It is negating. Good. And “lima” means “illa,” meaning: “No soul is except that it has a guardian over it.” What does the guardian do? He guards her. From whom? He guards her and he guards over her. As for guarding her, its evidence is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
For each one are successive [angels] before and behind him له معقبات من بين يديه ومن خلفه
[Ar-Ra'd 13:11]
What is it?
who protect him by the decree of Allah يحفظونه من أمر الله
[Ar-Ra'd 13:11]
This is from the Qur’an. From the Sunnah:
Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi in the night, a protector from Allah remains with him, and no Shaytan approaches him until he becomes morning. من قرأ آية الكرسي في ليلة لم يزل عليه من الله حافظ ولا يقربه شيطان حتى يصبح
This is guarding the soul, guarding the soul for the reckoning. It means that Allah has placed over every soul, each one of us, angels who record his deeds, as Allah the Exalted said:
(9) No! But you deny the Recompense. (10) And indeed, [appointed] over you are keepers, كلا بل تكذبون بالدين وإن عليكم لحافظين
[Al-Infitar 82:9-10]
These guardians are other than the saying of Allah the Exalted:
who protect him by the decree of Allah يحفظونه من أمر الله
[Ar-Ra'd 13:11]
from the command of Allah. So every person has a guardian who guards him from the command of Allah and records his deeds. When will the reckoning be upon it? When will the reckoning be upon it? Stop, you are being held back. Good, so there is no blame on you. Who knows when the reckoning will be upon the deeds?
The student: On the Day of Resurrection.

The Shaykh : On the Day of Resurrection. And for this reason, Allah named it the Day of Reckoning. Rest. This which is written for the person, he will be reckoned for it on the Day of Resurrection. And how will he be reckoned? Allah the Exalted said:
and We will produce for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will encounter spread open. ونخرج له يوم القيامة كتابا يلقاه منشورا
[Al-Isra 17:13]
open.
Read your book اقرأ كتابك
Read your book.
Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant." كفى بنفسك اليوم عليك حسيبا
[Al-Isra 17:14]
Some of the Salaf said: “By Allah, He has been just to you in making you a reckoner over yourself.” Yes, by Allah, this is justice. There is no one who claims against you and says, “Bring proof,” or else your word is rejected. This book exists, read it. “Sufficient for you today is yourself as a reckoner.” And what is written in this? Listen to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(16) And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein (17) When the two receivers receive, seated on the right and on the left. ولقد خلقنا الإنسان ونعلم ما توسوس به نفسه ونحن أقرب إليه من حبل الوريد إذا يتلقى المتلقيان عن اليمين وعن الشمال قعيد
[Qaf 50:16-17]
One on the right and one on the left.
Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record]. ما يلفظ من قول إلا لديه رقيب عتيد
[Qaf 50:18]
Raqib means a watcher, Atid means present, not absent. Not a single word of speech. The scholars say: “It is a text of generality” because the indefinite in the context of negation is for generality. But it may be accompanied by something that makes it a text of generality that does not allow for anything else. So what made it a text of generality? Please.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : No, there is no relative “ma” here. “Ma” is not pronounced. “Ma” is negating. What is it from these?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Why did you make it a text of generality?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : No, “min” is from the relative pronouns. If we had one of the scholars of grammar, he would do to you what he does. Rest. There is no grammar with you. The apparent is that “ma” is not pronounced. It is said: “Min qawl” (from speech). “Min” is an extra preposition. And when an extra preposition enters a word, it affirms its meaning, meaning the meaning of the context. “Ma yalfaz min qawl” (No word is spoken from speech). We say “min” is an extra preposition grammatically, but not extra in meaning, because its meaning is affirmation, affirmation of the negation.
Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record]. ما يلفظ من قول إلا لديه رقيب عتيد
[Qaf 50:18]
What speech? All speech, as long as we said “qawl” for the affirmed negation with “min,” it means all speech, whether good or evil or idle talk. Because the speech of a person is three categories: good, evil, and idle talk.
Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him say something good من كان يؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر فليقل خيرا
Sunan Ibn Majah 3971Sahih (Darussalam)
which is one of the three categories. So he does not say idle talk and he does not say evil. And listen to the descriptions of the servants of the Most Merciful:
And [they are] those who do not testify to falsehood, and when they pass near ill speech, they pass by with dignity. والذين لا يشهدون الزور وإذا مروا باللغو مروا كراما
[Al-Furqan 25:72]
safe from it, far from it. And how much is the idle talk in our speech! Rather, complete it. Rather, complete it. Rather, how much is the falsehood! And “al-zur” (falsehood) here is not false testimony. Every forbidden word is falsehood. So how much of it there is!
Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record]. ما يلفظ من قول إلا لديه رقيب عتيد
[Qaf 50:18]
A man entered upon Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal while he was sick, and may Allah have mercy on him, he was groaning from the illness. Do you know groaning? He was groaning from the illness. So he said: “O Abu 'Abdillah, so-and-so, and he mentioned his name, from the Tabi'un, said:” “The angel writes even the groaning of the sick person” even the groaning of the sick person. So he stopped the groaning, may Allah have mercy on him. He stopped the groaning, he was patient and endured the illness and did not groan, fearing what? Fearing that it would be written. Fearing that it would be written. So, “every soul has a guardian over it.” We return to the verse:
There is no soul إن كل نفس
[At-Tariq 86:4]
meaning: No soul is except that it has a guardian over it.
