The Reciter: Chapter: The saying of Allah the Exalted:
And Allah warns you of Himself
[Ali 'Imran 3:28]
And His saying, Glorious is His mention:
You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself
[Al-Ma'idah 5:116]
.

The Shaykh : This is also among the attributes of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), the soul. Al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him), from his jurisprudence, brought this after mentioning the chapter concerning the Essence, to indicate, may Allah have mercy on him, or to point out that the Essence means the soul, and the soul of a thing is the thing itself. So His saying, the Exalted:
And Allah warns you of Himself
[Ali 'Imran 3:28]
means He warns you of Him, and the soul is not something other than Allah, and Allah is not something other than the soul; Allah is the soul. Likewise,
You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself
[Al-Ma'idah 5:116]
So the soul is not an attribute added to the Essence, but it is the Essence itself. From this is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
and say among themselves
[Al-Mujadila 58:8]
Is the intended meaning that their souls are something other than their essences? No, they are their essences. And thus, the soul means the essence.
And Allah warns you of Himself
[Ali 'Imran 3:28]
means He warns you of Him. And this is indicated by His saying, the Exalted:
And of Me alone should you fear
and of Me be mindful وإياي فاتقون
and the like of that.
The Reciter: Amr ibn Hafs ibn Ghiyath narrated to us.

The Shaykh : And in His saying, the Exalted:
And Allah warns you of Himself
[Ali 'Imran 3:28]
there is evidence that a person must fear whom? He must fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic). He does not fear Him only outwardly, but outwardly and inwardly, in what he says, in what he does, and in what he conceals, openly or secretly. For Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says:
And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him
[Qaf 50:16]
May Allah grant us and you certainty. If a person knows this and is certain of it, he will fear his Lord (Mighty and Majestic) and be afraid of falling into His prohibitions, and he will fear
And Allah warns you of Himself
[Ali 'Imran 3:28]
And He said:
You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself
[Al-Ma'idah 5:116]
The one who said this is 'Isa ibn Maryam, saying to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) on the Day of Resurrection:
And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, 'Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?'" He will say, "Exalted are You! وإذ قال الله يا عيسى بن مريم أأنت قلت للناس اتخذوني وأمي إلهين من دون الله قال سبحانك
[Al-Ma'idah 5:116]
Exalted are You, that I should say such a thing.
It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:116]
And when he denied having said it, he clarified what he had said to them:
I said not to them except what You commanded me - to worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:117]
And the followers of 'Isa, the Christians today, who claim to be followers of 'Isa, are liars. They say that Allah is the third of three, and 'Isa had said to them:
to worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord
[Al-Ma'idah 5:117]
But they now worship 'Isa and his mother, and the Lord is three persons in their view. Indeed, some of them worship the cross. This is part of their foolishness and misguidance. The cross is originally a wooden pole on which, as they claim, 'Isa (peace and blessings be upon him) was crucified. Reason dictates that one of them who follows 'Isa and loves 'Isa, if he sees the cross, should break it, is that not so? If he loves 'Isa, does he love the pole on which he was crucified and not hate it? He hates it. Reason dictates that he should break the cross because, in their claim, a prophet was crucified on it. And we exonerate 'Isa ibn Maryam (peace and blessings be upon him) and testify that he is the servant of Allah and His messenger from having been crucified, and that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) purified him of that. And when they intended to kill him and crucify him, Allah raised him to Himself.
And Allah is Exalted in Might, Wise. And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it was made to appear so to them.
Glory to Allah the Great. The root of their misguidance is based on a delusion: a man was made to resemble 'Isa, so they killed him and crucified him and said, “This is 'Isa.” And it was not the Christians who killed him; rather, the Jews killed him, in their claim, and the Jews crucified him, in their claim. And yet Allah the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another
[Al-Ma'idah 5:51]
Have you seen how they were allies of one another, while in reality they were enemies? But they are allies against a third enemy, the Muslims. The Muslims have been their enemies since the dawn of Islam until today, and until the Day of Resurrection. And the Jews will be killed, if Allah wills, by the hands of the Muslims, if Allah wills, until they hide in the trees, and the tree will say, “O servant of Allah, this is a Jew under me, so kill him.” So the result is that 'Isa ibn Maryam (peace and blessings be upon him) only came with the oneness of Allah that his brothers among the messengers came with.
I said not to them except what You commanded me - to worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:117]
And the meaning of “I took you” is I took you to Myself and raised you.
