What is the ruling on this phrase, for example, saying that a woman has no reliance except on her brother? And likewise, it is said: I placed my trust in him.

The questioner : We have also heard many scholars say in some of their lessons, for example, that a woman has no reliance except on her brother. Is this phrase permissible, or is there a better phrase for this?

The Shaykh : Do you mean from the linguistic aspect?

The questioner : Yes, from the linguistic aspect and from the aspect of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) as well.

The Shaykh : It is best to say "after Allah," but if he says this phrase, there is nothing wrong with it, because it is known that the intended meaning is in terms of the natural, cosmic causes that Allah has decreed for humans; this woman has no one other than her brother.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : However, the linguistic etiquette is always to mention the one whom some philosophers describe as the cause of causes, which is the Lord of the worlds, and this is not one of His names, of course.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : If he mentions it and says "after Allah."

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : "She has no one but so-and-so," there is nothing wrong with that.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : That would be better.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : And beware of it.

The questioner : The question here is, is this phrase also permissible to use in the context of tawakkul (reliance upon Allah), like the phrase "reliance on her brother"? For example, is tawakkul also used in that sense?

The Shaykh : What is the word? What?

The questioner : The word tawakkul.

The Shaykh : Tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means).

The questioner : Tawakkul, tawakkul.

The Shaykh : Tawakkul.

The questioner : Is every word like the word "reliance," for example, if you please?

The Shaykh : Meaning, "I placed my trust in you."

The questioner : Like the phrase "she has no reliance except on her brother."

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : Is it permissible to say "she has no tawakkul except on her brother"?

The Shaykh : No, tawakkul has a specific legal meaning different from the word "reliance."

The questioner : Ah

The Shaykh : Yes, so it is not permissible.

The questioner: Yes.

The questioner : A final question, may Allah bless you, Your Excellency. The Shaykh .
