The Shaykh : We have been tasked with acts of worship, some of which are actions involving speech and deed, some are wealth that is spent, and some are restraining the self from its desires. What is an example of the first? Speech and actions, such as prayer, for instance. Prayer contains speech and actions, and it is preceded by ritual purity. The ritual purity may be difficult on cold days and in the rain. And there is wealth that is spent, such as zakah, for zakah is given from one's wealth. It is well known to us all that wealth is beloved to souls, as Allah the Exalted said:
And indeed he is, in love of wealth, intense. وإنه لحب الخير لشديد
[Al-'Adiyat 100:8]
meaning because of the love of wealth. And He the Exalted said:
And you love wealth with immense love. وتحبون المال حباً جماً
[Al-Fajr 89:20]
And there is restraining the self from its desires, such as fasting, for fasting is restraining the self from what it desires and loves of food, drink, and sexual intercourse.
