The questioner : She says, “I am a sister committed to the religion of Allah and wearing the hijab, and I want to perform Hajj to the House of Allah, and I know that it is not permissible for me to perform Hajj without a mahram, and I do not have a mahram with me. Should I go to Hajj alone? I am eager to go to Makkah al-Mukarramah and the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) Mosque.”
The Shaykh : It is not permissible for a woman to travel without a mahram, neither for Hajj nor for anything else. If she misses Hajj because she has no mahram, she commits no sin. What indicates this, namely that a woman does not travel without a mahram, neither for Hajj nor for anything else, is what is established in “al-Sahihayn” in the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) delivering a sermon, saying:Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 9:2565 Then a man stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! My wife has gone out for Hajj, and I have been enrolled in the expedition of such-and-such. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bulugh al-Maram 718 Even though this woman went out for Hajj, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered her husband to perform Hajj with her.
And you should not burden yourself and your conscience. I say this to the questioner: if you remain behind because of the lack of a mahram, you have left Hajj in obedience to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade traveling without a mahram. So remaining behind due to the lack of a mahram is a response to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
