The State of Gratitude.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The fourth is gratitude: that one thanks Allah for what befalls him of that which causes him pain. However, this appears to be an impossible matter. How can a person thank his Lord for something that causes him pain? It is said, though, that those of high rank and lofty stations do not find this difficult in their case, for they do not look at this calamity as if its purpose were to humiliate the afflicted one. Rather, they see that its purpose and wisdom are to elevate the afflicted one in degrees and for Allah to expiate his sins thereby. So he thanks Allah for its results and fruits, because it expiates his sins and also elevates him in degrees in the Hereafter. When he looks at this aspect, this calamity or this trial turns into a gift. Does one thank for a gift or not? One thanks for it. But these are lofty stations that only one in a thousand reaches.
So, people facing calamities have four states:
Anger, patience, contentment, and gratitude.
