How to Show Gratitude to One's Parents

Question:
How do we show gratitude to our parents? Is gratitude only through words, or what else?

Answer:
Gratitude is expressed through words and deeds. One shows gratitude to Allah through words and deeds by affirming His oneness, being sincere to Him, obeying His commands, and avoiding His prohibitions. This is how one shows gratitude to Allah, as the Exalted said: [Surat Saba: 13].
Likewise, one shows gratitude to one's parents by being dutiful to them, providing for them if they are in need, listening to and obeying them in what is right, visiting them if they are not with you, being gentle with them, inquiring about their needs and their health, speaking kindly to them, and lowering the wing of humility to them. All of this is part of showing them gratitude. One should also remember their past kindness. Thus, you perform deeds that please them and do not anger Allah, which is beneficial for them. This is called gratitude, and kind words are also gratitude.
