The questioner : And this questioner says: O honorable Shaykh, what is the ruling on adopting the clothing and hairstyles of non-Muslim women for Muslim women through magazines ... and the like, with the condition that this questioner imposes during the tailoring that it not contradict the Islamic Shari'ah and that it not resemble men?

The Shaykh : Yes, the question is: What is the ruling on adopting the clothing of the disbelievers, their clothing and appearance, such as cutting the hair and the like? Is this permissible or not? The answer to this is that we say that imitating the disbelievers is forbidden, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who copies any people is one of them. من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم
Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
And because imitating them leads to the arrogance of these disbelievers, because they see that they are being followed, and they take pride when Muslims follow them in their conditions. Therefore, you find that they strive with utmost effort to bring us such clothing so that we imitate them, until the form and appearance of our society becomes the form and appearance of their societies. And it is well known that the clothing of the disbelievers does not observe the Shari'ah covering; rather, it is all clothing that is 'awrah (the part of the body that must be covered).
