The Meaning of the Saying of Allah the Exalted: "O you who believe! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor raise [your voices] against him in speech as some of you raise against others, lest your deeds become worthless while you do not perceive."

The Shaykh :
O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not. يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا ترفعوا أصواتكم فوق صوت النبي ولا تجهروا له بالقول كجهر بعضكم لبعض أن تحبط أعمالكم وأنتم لا تشعرون
[Al-Hujurat 49:2]
When this verse was revealed, there was a man among the Companions who was a powerful orator among the orators of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), namely Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammās (may Allah be pleased with him). When this verse was revealed, and he was an orator who spoke with powerful sermons before the Messenger (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him), he remained in his house. He remained in his house, not going out, and his tears did not dry up; he wept night and day. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) missed him. And it was part of the care of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his good looking after his Companions that if he missed someone, he would ask about him. And so it is befitting for the teaching Shaykh to check on his students, for the father to check on his children and his family, for every shepherd is responsible for his flock. So he asked about him, and they said, "O Messenger of Allah, since this verse was revealed, what is it?"
O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet يا أيها الذين آمنوا لا ترفعوا أصواتكم فوق صوت النبي
[Al-Hujurat 49:2]
He is in his house weeping. So the Prophet (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) sent to him and said to him:
You will live happily, be killed as a martyr, and enter Paradise. إنك تعيش سعيداً وتقتل شهيداً وتدخل الجنة
Allah is the Greatest. The fear has become a cause of his safety. He was afraid of the punishment of Allah.
lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not. أن تحبط أعمالكم وأنتم لا تشعرون
[Al-Hujurat 49:2]
So the Messenger (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) explained to him that he was not among those [mentioned in the verse], and that his end would be that he would be killed as a martyr and enter Paradise. Therefore, we now testify that Thabit ibn Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) is among the people of Paradise, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) testified to it, and indeed it happened, for this man was killed as a martyr in the Battle of Yamamah.
