Among the etiquettes: that one should possess wisdom by which he knows and assesses matters, so that he does not forbid something that would result in a greater harm than the thing itself.

The Shaykh : And among the etiquettes are the etiquettes of the one who enjoins good and forbids evil: that emotion should not drive him to do something whose consequences are not praiseworthy and which results in more harm than the harm resulting from the commission of that evil. In other words, the one who enjoins and forbids should have wisdom by which he knows and assesses matters, so that he does not forbid something where the prohibition results in more harm than the commission of the act. The evidence for this is the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He: [Al-An'am 6:108]. So look at how Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, forbade the reviling of the idols of the polytheists, even though reviling the idols of the polytheists is required, because Allah forbade their reviling. Why? Because reviling these idols, which are deserving of reviling, leads to the reviling of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, who is free from every defect. For this reason He said: [Al-An'am 6:108]. So if we see a Christian, and the Christian worships Jesus and says that Allah is the third of three, if we revile his religion and our reviling of his religion necessitates that he reviles the religion of Islam, what is obligatory upon us? That we do not revile his religion. And by his religion, I mean the religion he is upon, which is shirk (associating partners with Allah). As for the religion brought by 'Isa (peace be upon him), it is a true religion and a religion of tawhid (the oneness of Allah). For this reason Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said in Surat al-Ma'idah: [Al-Ma'idah 5:116-117].
