That the caller to Islam should be characterized by reason, not being overcome by emotion.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The caller to Islam must be characterized by reason. I do not mean by reason here the intellect of perception. Rather, I mean the intellect of conduct, which is soundness of judgment, for the intellect is of two kinds: The first is the intellect of perception, which is the criterion for legal accountability, and it is what you read in the books as a condition for the obligation of prayer, for example, "reason." Which reason is this? Yes.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : The intellect of perception, the opposite of which is insanity.
The second is the intellect of soundness, or the intellect of conduct, which is soundness in dealing, the opposite of which is foolishness. For this reason, you find in the Qur'an that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) denies reason to the polytheists, even though among them are the intelligent, the cunning, and those who may perceive matters that a Muslim does not perceive. But the reason that is the reason of conduct, which is soundness, is lacking in these people. So I say: The caller to Islam must have reason such that he overcomes emotion, for the caller who has zeal for the religion of Allah may be driven by that zeal to impulsiveness, so his emotion becomes a storm that sweeps him away, destroys him, and strips the blessing from his calling. But if the emotion is restrained by reason, which is what the Shari'ah requires, then his calling will have a profound and beneficial effect. Often, a person loses the blessing of his calling because of conduct that the Shari'ah does not require and that reason does not require.
Perhaps some of you have heard what was reported from the Mother of the Believers, A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her)
When a Jew passed by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Sām 'alayk" حين مر يهودي برسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال : السام عليك
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 64:847
- meaning death - because "sām" means death. From this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
There is healing in black cumin for all diseases except death. الحبة السوداء شفاء من كل داء إلا السام
Sahih al-Bukhari 5688
meaning except death.
So a Jew passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying, "Sām 'alayk." A man among them passed by and said, "Sām 'alayk." A'ishah heard him and said, "Sām 'alayk wa al-lanah" فيمر اليهود بالنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يقولون السام عليك. فمر رجل منهم فقال السام عليك فسمعته عائشة فقالت : عليك السام واللعنة
What drove her to this? Zeal. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade her and explained to her that Allah gives through gentleness what He does not give through harshness. This is something observed and tested. For this reason, I say that this land must be the bearer of the torch of good for the Muslim community in all corners of the world, but its callers must be of a high degree of knowledge and reason.
