The obligation to make up the fast is not applicable, and that is because this fast is a voluntary fast, and a person does not sin by leaving off a voluntary fast, nor is it obligatory for him to make it up. However, I inform the questioner and whoever is listening that fasting the three days of the month is sufficient, whether in the beginning, the middle, or the end, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not mind fasting them in the beginning of the month, the middle, or the end. And that their being on the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth days is a recommended practice (sunnah), and their reward is not lost if he places them before these days or after them.

The questioner : I fast three days of every month, the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth. Is it obligatory for me to make up the fast if I break it during these days as a result of menstruation or as a result of forgetfulness? I ask you for guidance?

The Shaykh : The obligation to make up the fast is not applicable, and that is because this fast is a voluntary fast, and a person does not sin by leaving off a voluntary fast, nor is it obligatory for him to make it up.
The equivalent of this, for example, is that praying at the beginning of its time is better, but if one prays it at the end of the time or in the middle of the time, it is sufficient. Likewise, fasting the three days in the white days (the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth) is better, but if one fasts them in the beginning of the month or the end, that achieves sufficiency and reward. And that fasting three days of every month is like fasting the whole year, as that came from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable one.
