The Shaykh : The author (may Allah have mercy on him) says:
“And He is al-Wadud, He loves them and they love Him *** His beloved ones, and the favor is for the bestower”
He said: “He loves them and they love Him”. The word *fa‘ul* in the author’s speech carries the meaning of *fa‘il* (active) and the meaning of *ma‘ful* (passive). It carries the meaning of *fa‘il* because of his saying: “He loves them”, so He is *wadd* (loving) in the sense of *ma‘ful* because of his saying: “and they love Him”, so He is *mawdud* (loved). Thus, He, Mighty and Majestic, is the Lover of His beloved ones, and His beloved ones are lovers of Him. And Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:[Al-Ma'idah 5:54]. This is from His names: al-Wadud. From His names is al-Wadud, as Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Buruj 85:14]. And the meaning of this is the Lover of His beloved ones. And what follows? The Loved One for them. So He is *wadd* (loving) and *mawdud* (loved). He said:
“And He is the One who placed love in their hearts *** and rewarded them with a second love”
O Allah, place Your love in our hearts.
The student: Amen.
The Shaykh : He is the One who placed His love in their hearts, so they loved Him. And when they loved Him, they worked for Him in obedience to Him. Then He rewarded them with a second love. What is it? His love for them. So He first bestowed upon them by placing love in their hearts for Him, then He rewarded them with His love for them. This is true ihsan. Yes, by Allah, this is ihsan: that He first does good, then does good again. He does good first by placing love in the hearts of His servants, then secondly by His love for them. Not as an exchange, nor for the expectation of gratitude. That is, He does not hope thereby that they will exchange with Him, nor does He expect from them that they will thank Him. In the sense that He does not wait for them to thank Him. So He, Exalted and Glorified is He, loves them and places love in their hearts as a favor.
He said: “But He loves their gratitude and their being grateful ***”. *Shukur* is the action, *shakur* is the doer. The doer means He loves gratitude from them and He loves the one who is grateful.
“*** not out of any need of His for gratitude”, because He is free of need of everyone other than Himself.
“And He is al-Shakur, so He will not let their efforts be lost *** but He will multiply them without counting”
O Allah, to You is praise also. He is al-Shakur in the sense that He will not let their efforts be lost, but rather what? He will multiply them without counting. A good deed is rewarded with ten times its like, up to seven hundred times, up to many multiples.
