The questioner : Some female students make mistakes in the recitation of the Noble Qur'an, and sometimes they add to or subtract from the letters of the verses. When we guide them to the correct recitation, they become angry and say: "Our intention is not to correct the recitation, but to mock us." Should we leave them in their error, or should we clarify the correct recitation to them? And is there a sin upon us? We ask for your guidance, may you be rewarded.

The Shaykh : It is obligatory for one who hears his brother making mistakes in the Book of Allah to point it out to him, because this falls under the category of cooperating in righteousness and piety. It is not permissible for anyone to intentionally distort the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) through incorrect recitation, because Allah spoke the Qur'an in a clear Arabic language in a manner consistent with the Arabic language. If incorrect recitation occurs, it constitutes a distortion of the words from their proper places, and intentionally doing so is forbidden. And if intentionally doing so is forbidden, then pointing it out is obligatory. Therefore, the teacher, or anyone other than a teacher, if she hears someone making mistakes in the Qur'an, must point it out to him, whether he is angry or pleased. The fact that the one who made the mistake in the Qur'an takes the approach mentioned in the question, which is having a bad opinion of his brother who helped him in righteousness and piety by pointing out the error, is wrong. Rather, it is obligatory for the one to whom his brother offers advice to assume the best of it and to thank him for this advice, because the advisor is thereby helping him to obey Allah and avoid His prohibitions. If we were to abandon cooperating in righteousness and piety and forbidding evil because of the anger of the one to whom it was directed, neither command nor prohibition would be established. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you. This is Abu 'Abdullah Muhammad from al-Qasim saying.
