Explanation of the reason why the people of ta'til (denial of the divine attributes) call the wisdom of Allah a cause and a purpose
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : If the wisdom of the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, is denied, does it not follow that all His actions are play and futility? Is that not so? Because one who has no wisdom, if he hits upon wisdom, does so unintentionally; otherwise, the default is that all his actions are folly.
Why did they deny wisdom? They said, if we affirm wisdom, it follows that the will of Allah is connected to purposes, meaning that He has a purpose; that He has a purpose.
It is said to them: If they are among those who affirm the will, the will also exists only so that the one who wills may attain what he intends. The wisdom with which none of the actions of Allah the Exalted is accompanied is not a purpose whose benefit returns to Allah. Rather, it is wisdom whose benefit returns to whom? To the created being. Its benefit returns to the created being. As for Allah, Mighty and Majestic, He is rich in Himself and does not need it[Az-Zumar 39:7]. [Ali 'Imran 3:97] But the wisdom that the actions of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, necessitate, or the wisdom that necessitates the actions of Allah, is wisdom that concerns the interests of the created beings and the repelling of harm from them, and it is not a purpose that benefits the doer, who is Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Yes. You called wisdom a cause and a purpose. Why? In order to repel people from affirming wisdom. Glory be to Allah, that they should call the sweet wisdom, smooth to the ear and to the tongue, a cause and a purpose, in order to make people averse to accepting it. We ask Allah for well-being. They have wronged themselves and wronged others.
