Many people among us swear by other than Allah, knowing that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever swears by other than Allah has committed shirk (associating partners with Allah).” What is your advice?

The questioner : Many people in our society swear by other than Allah, knowing that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who swears by anyone but Allah is polytheist.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3251Sahih (Al-Albani)
So I hope you will advise these people. May Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : Swearing by other than Allah is a sin against the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and a type of shirk (associating partners with Allah). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
to swear by your fathers, so whoever has to take an oath, he should swear by Allah or keep quiet.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6646
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who swears by anyone or anything other than Allah, has indeed committed an act of Kufr or Shirk
Riyad as-Salihin 1711
.
It is obligatory to be cautious of this, and a person should swear by Allah if he intends to swear. However, it is not recommended for a person to swear often, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And keep your oaths
One of the meanings of this is that you should not swear often by Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
But what slips off the tongue without intention is not held against a person, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths
[Al-Ma'idah 5:89]
And His saying in another verse:
Allah does not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He imposes blame upon you for what your hearts have earned
[Al-Baqarah 2:225]
And whoever swears by other than Allah must repent to Allah, seek His forgiveness, and not return to what he did.
