Al-Halali: Some writers claim in their books that purification and training are not the best path for resuming Islamic life, so what he calls "repulsion" must be added, meaning jihad?
The Shaykh : May Allah guide them.
The questioner : He says that purification and training are not sufficient in this age; what he calls "repulsion" must be added. He writes in the name of the Salafis, and his books circulate in the name of the Salafis?
The Shaykh : Can this "repulsion" not be included in training?
The questioner : In his view, it does not accompany training.
The Shaykh: How.
The questioner : In his conception.
The Shaykh : As a rule.
The questioner : That is correct.
The Shaykh : O people, there is no disagreement among Muslims regarding the obligation of jihad and that it is of two types. These people who keep talking about jihad, of course, do not mean jihad with the tongue; they mean jihad with teeth, with weapons. So, which of these preachers who are enthusiastic about this type of jihad are actually fighting?
The questioner : We have not seen them fighting?
The Shaykh : Are we fighting this type of jihad? Are we fighting? Say it plainly, O people. Unfortunately, we are not fighting! So when we say that purification and training are necessary, this does not mean that we should not train ourselves to sacrifice our lives and everything we hold dear in the path of Allah, the Exalted. But when is this? When we reach this starting point, when we are able, at least, to implement what Allah, the Exalted, said:[Al-Anfal 8:60] If Muslims today, all of them, unfortunately, cannot fight this type of jihad, it is not necessary that it be sufficient; it must be purification and training. They must say "and jihad." They did not say "and jihad"; they said "and repulsion." Well, what is behind this repulsion? Jihad, without a doubt. This all does not contradict our saying "purification and training." Training is the training of souls to be ready to do everything that Allah, the Exalted, has informed us of and commanded. This falls under purification because there are things that people are commanded to do even today, and Allah has not commanded them, especially in matters of creed, as you know. So purification is necessary, and training is necessary. Their saying that this is not sufficient means, at the very least, that they understood the concept of training in a very, very narrow sense. They do not know what meaning they understood, so they only added the issue of repulsion: repulsion is necessary. And yet, we say there is no objection on our part to you or anyone else adding other terms that do not contradict it but rather clarify it further. There is no objection on our part. But are you with purification and training in their broad, very broad circle?
Ali Hasan: No, by Allah.
The Shaykh : The answer is no; they are not there at all. So what is the benefit of this addition with this word? We say that it is included in the general scope of training. That is our answer.
The Shaykh : May Allah guide them.
