The ruling on distributing and selling trousers.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Sometimes we are given trousers to distribute to people in need. What is the ruling on taking them and distributing them?

The Shaykh : Tell them to have them tailored into jalabiyyahs. I know, but I mean from the standpoint of forbidding evil, no.

The questioner : Do we sell them, then?

The Shaykh : What is the benefit of what you are selling? My brother, you use the food that you eat, and you distribute the food that you do not eat. Do not distribute the clothes that you wear; distribute the clothes that you do not wear. No, do not distribute them. As is well known, Allah says in the Noble Qur'an:
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. وتعاونوا على البر والتقوى ولا تعاونوا على الإثم والعدوان
[Al-Ma'idah 5:2]
For example, if you do not wear trousers, why do you make others wear them? Therefore, a person...
None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself. لا يؤمن أحدكم حتى يحب لأخيه ما يحب لنفسه
Sahih al-Bukhari 13
is from the good. So you do not see this as good, but rather as evil. Why do you offer it to people? This is the one who volunteers and offers you trousers so that you can distribute them to people.

The questioner : Trousers and shirts.

The Shaykh : We are talking about trousers now. As for the one who offers these things, give him a sermon: "My brother, instead of wasting your money on something Allah does not like..."

The questioner : He is a merchant, my brother.

The Shaykh : Because he is a merchant, I am telling you to give him advice. He should not trade in this in the first place, meaning clothing, because it is non-Islamic clothing. And secondly, if he wants to do good, he should tailor things that are permissible Islamically.

The questioner : If our Shaykh gets drunk and leaves.

The Shaykh : May Allah guide you, this man.

The questioner : Is wearing trousers not permissible?

The Shaykh : Yes, it is. But please, give our brother a moment to finish what he has to say. What did you say?
Abu Layla : Yes, our Shaykh, I used to sell trousers, shirts, skirts, and women's dresses. By the grace of Allah, when I asked our Shaykh about this ruling, he said it is not permissible. So I started to stop dealing in them and finished in the shortest time. By the grace of Allah, now I sell only the jalabiyyah, abayas, and men's dishdashas, and I sell nothing else. And honey. Yes,
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out ومن يتق الله يجعل له مخرجا
[At-Talaq 65:2]
.

The questioner : Our Shaykh, may Allah bless you. This man is one of the merchants in Oman. He is a man who wants, meaning, to meet with you. He says to me that you should visit him at his home. How many times does he say to me?

The Shaykh : Come on, be quick with the good. Instead of you giving the advice, I will give it and earn its reward.

The questioner : If we set a time with him, if Allah wills, and we will tell you.

The Shaykh : Come on, it is up to you. You know, we do not joke about such matters.

The questioner : We understand that the trouser is now disliked or forbidden?

The Shaykh : But before you build castles in the air on this, I want you to be convinced that this is truly not permissible. So, do you know why it is not permissible?

The questioner : No, the question is still in its beginning in practical life.

The Shaykh : This is not a question. You want to raise an objection to the Islamic ruling. So before you raise an objection to the Islamic ruling, look at whether you are convinced of it or not?

The questioner : I want to ask about the Islamic evidence.

The Shaykh : I am telling you, ask. You want to say the reality is such and such. What do we want with the reality? Does the existing reality today in the lands of Muslims represent Islam?

The questioner : No, it does not represent it.

The Shaykh : Leave the reality to us. The duty of the Muslims who are careful to adhere to the Book and the Sunnah is to treat the reality, at least the one around them, at least. So you, may Allah bless you, and all those present now, must know why the trouser is not permissible to wear. And the answer is for two reasons. The first reason is that it is not from the clothing of the Muslims. This trouser came to us when the ones who wear trousers came, and they are the disbelievers and the polytheists, and so on, and they occupied the lands of Islam, whether here in Jordan or in Syria or in India and Pakistan, and so on. And they spread their traditions and customs in these lands. Do not hold it against me, but in the old days in the lands of Islam, you would not find Muslims with shaved heads. You would not find this. What is the reason? Because of the Islamic customs that were prevalent. But the Europeans colonized us, truly colonized us. First, they colonized us militarily, so they occupied our lands by force. Then they colonized us socially, they colonized us culturally, and so on.
