Wiping over a cast.

The questioner : You quoted, may Allah bless you, from *Tammam al-Mannah fi al-Ta'liq 'ala Fiqh al-Sunnah*, in the chapter on the issue of casts, and you said, may Allah preserve you, that you presented the hadiths that Sayyid Sabiq cited in this issue, and all of them are weak according to al-Bayhaqi (*Sunan al-Bayhaqi*). Then you presented the hadith regarding which the scholars of hadith differed on whether it is marfu' (traced to the Prophet) or mawquf (stopping at a Companion), and then you said that the mawquf version is a valid hadith of Ibn 'Umar, "that he used to wipe over casts," and you preferred that it is mawquf from Ibn 'Umar and valid. But in the end, you quoted from Ibn Hazm al-Zahiri (may Allah have mercy on him) and said, "Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear," as long as this matter is not established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So we ask: Is it not permissible to take comfort or rely on the action of a Companion, provided that no one is found to have contradicted him, for example, the case of Ibn 'Umar?

The Shaykh : We, my brother, have answers to this. We are not obligated to do it, but we do not deny the one who does it. And just now we mentioned this regarding raising the hands in the funeral prayer, do you remember?

The questioner : I remember, because some of the brothers, may Allah bless you, interpret it incorrectly, saying "as long as it is not established" means we should put it aside.

The Shaykh : We are not obligated, that is correct, but the fact that we are not obligated is because only one Companion did it and it is not established in the Sunnah, so we are not obligated. And if one of the Muslims does it, we do not deny him. And for that reason, we said the same thing regarding raising the hands in the funeral prayer: we do not do it, but as long as it is established from a respected Companion...

The questioner : ...and no one is found to have contradicted him in that.

The Shaykh : That is a condition, of course. But if someone is found to have contradicted him, it becomes more permissive.

The questioner : Wiping over a cast means it is possible.
