The questioner : If one enters the prayer with the imam while he is bowing, should one recite the opening supplication when standing for the second unit, or not? I hope for your guidance.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment:
If a latecomer enters the prayer with the imam while he is bowing, he must first say the takbir of intention while standing before he bows down. Then he bows down. In this case, if he says the takbir for bowing, that is better; if he does not say it, there is no blame on him. This is what the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) said. Then, when he stands for the second unit, he does not recite the opening supplication, because the opening supplication is only for the beginning of the prayer, and the beginning of the prayer has already passed. It is a recommended practice (sunnah) that has missed its time, so it is not made up in a different place. However, he should seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan for the sake of the recitation.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
