The Shaykh : And among the good that Allah the Exalted has placed in this blessed month is the aforementioned good: victories in Islam, victories for the Messenger (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him), and victories after his time. Let us limit ourselves to the victories that occurred for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). What are the great victories that occurred in the month of Ramadan for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)? The student, stand up. Yes.
The student: The Battle of Badr.
The Shaykh : The Battle of what? Badr, and the second one.
The student: The Battle of the Conquest, the Conquest of Makkah.
The Shaykh : Rest. If a question is directed to one person, the other should not speak. Okay. So, the Battle of Badr, and the second is the Battle of the Conquest, the Conquest of Makkah. Regarding the Battle of Badr, we will speak of it in general terms. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) met them, accompanied by his Companions, who were three hundred and a few men, with seventy camels and a few horses, against a group greater in number and stronger in equipment than them, namely Quraysh. They were between nine hundred and one thousand. The two lines met, and victory was for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). He defeated this large number, killing seventy men and taking seventy men as prisoners. He threw twenty-four men from the nobles of Quraysh into a pit at Badr, a foul, stinking pit, meaning one with a bad, rotten smell. He threw them into this pit. Allah is the Greatest. A great victory, and victory is only from Him, Allah.[Ali 'Imran 3:160] He stood over them and said, “O so-and-so, son of so-and-so,” naming them by their names and their fathers’ names: He said this, addressing the dead. So the Companions asked the Messenger (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him), “How do you speak to people, meaning the dead?” He said: Sunan an-Nasa'i 2075Sahih (Darussalam) Meaning they hear the rebuke of the Messenger (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him), but they cannot answer, because the dead do not answer anyone and do not benefit anyone. For this reason, this principle exists. For this reason, this principle clarifies the weakness, indeed the invalidity, of the hadith of Abu Umamah regarding instructing the dead after burial. Because a weak, indeed fabricated, hadith was reported that the Messenger (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) established this instruction, where you stand over the grave and say, “O so-and-so, son of so-and-so, look, Subhan Allah. Allah says: For what purpose? So that they answer the two angels. And this is wrong. The dead cannot perform any action after their death. Sunan Abi Dawud 2880Sahih (Al-Albani) But what do we do when we bury the dead? We do what the Messenger (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to do. When he finished burying the dead, he would stand over him and say: Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani) Meaning, say: “O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, forgive him,” three times, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) would supplicate three times when he made a supplication. And ask for steadfastness for him: “O Allah, make him steadfast, O Allah, make him steadfast, O Allah, make him steadfast,” and then leave. Do not stand there. Seek forgiveness for him, ask for steadfastness for him, and leave. Because now, when he is buried, two angels come to him and ask him: “Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?” We ask Allah to make us and you steadfast when we are asked and when we stand before Him. I say that this hadith, if the work of the son of Adam is cut off when he dies, indicates that this hadith is weak, indeed fabricated, and is not authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). It is sufficient for us to say what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, make him steadfast.” As for those who were thrown into the pit at Badr from among the polytheists, did they hear the Messenger? What? Yes. But does this speech benefit them? No. But it increases their regret, may Allah protect us. The Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) said it to rebuke them, to make them feel remorse, and to increase their regret. We seek refuge in Allah. As for the Battle of the Conquest, its cause was the treachery of Quraysh and their breaking of the treaty. Because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) had made a treaty with Quraysh at al-Hudaybiyyah, and al-Hudaybiyyah was in the sixth year of the Hijrah. But they broke the treaty, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) attacked them in Ramadan in the eighth year of the Hijrah, and he conquered Makkah and achieved a great victory. And in this, Allah the Mighty and Majestic says: [An-Nasr 110:1-3].
