The Ruling on Supplicating to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Seeking Intercession from Him
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Even if you were to come to the Messenger (may peace and blessings be upon him), the intercessor, the one who intercedes, the intercessor for the Ummah, even if you came to him now and said, "O Messenger of Allah, intercede for me," it is forbidden for you; he does not have the power to do this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) does not possess intercession except by the permission of whom? By the permission of Allah. [Al-Baqarah 2:255]. On the Day of Resurrection, people will be afflicted with sorrow and distress that they cannot bear. How long is the time? Fifty thousand years. Is the time summer or winter? It is hot; the sun draws near to the distance of a mile. Sweat will reach a person according to his deeds: some will have sweat reaching their ankles, some their knees, some their waists, and some will be covered by sweat. It is a great distress that you cannot imagine. People will say to one another, "Seek someone to intercede for us." They will come to Adam, but he will excuse himself; they will come to Noah, but he will excuse himself; they will come to Abraham, but he will excuse himself; they will come to Moses, but he will excuse himself; they will come to Jesus, but Jesus will not offer an excuse; rather, he will refer them to someone better than him, saying, "Come to Muhammad, the servant for whom Allah forgave what came before of his sin and what came after." Did Allah make the Messenger of Allah an intercessor for you and for us? Does the Messenger of Allah stand up and intercede immediately? No. He prostrates beneath the Throne, and Allah opens for him praises that He had not opened before, and he prostrates a long prostration until permission is granted to him, and it is said to him: Musnad Ahmad 15Hasan (Darussalam). This is the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him); he cannot intercede except by the permission of Allah, ever. So, my brothers, it is not permissible, ever, for us to ask any dead person for any of our needs. Whom do we ask? We ask Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abdullah ibn Abbas: Ask Allah, my brother; there is no intermediary between you and Allah. The Lord, Mighty and Majestic, has opened His door and says to you: [Ghafir 40:60] Do you want generosity greater than this? It is He Himself, Mighty and Majestic, who opens the door: [Ghafir 40:60] And He says to His Prophet: [Al-Baqarah 2:186] We ask Allah to respond to us and to you.
So why do you ask a created being like you, a created being who cannot benefit you, not even with a sip of water? So, supplicating to the dead, what is it? It is foolishness in the mind, and what is it? It is misguidance in the religion. Misguidance in the religion.
Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?
من ذا الذي يشفع عنده إلا بإذن اللهRaise your head, O Muhammad; speak and you will be heard, intercede and your intersession will be accepted
ارفع رأسك وقل يسمع واشفع تشفعIf you ask, ask Allah, and if you seek help, seek help from Allah.
إذا سألت فاسأل الله إذا استعن فاستعن باللهCall upon Me; I will respond to you.
ادعوني أستجب لكمCall upon Me; I will respond to you.
ادعوني استجب لكمAnd when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me
وإذا سألك عبادي عني فإني قريب أجيب دعوة الداع إذا دعانSo why do you ask a created being like you, a created being who cannot benefit you, not even with a sip of water? So, supplicating to the dead, what is it? It is foolishness in the mind, and what is it? It is misguidance in the religion. Misguidance in the religion.
