Is it true that the meaning of the settled place of Allah's mercy is the essence of Allah?

The questioner : One of my shaykhs, from among the people of trust, says that the settled place of Allah's mercy is the essence of Allah. What is your opinion, O honorable one?

The Shaykh : This is not correct. The settled place of Allah's mercy is Paradise. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
The companions of Paradise, that Day, are [in] a better settlement أصحاب الجنة يومئذ خير مستقرا
[Al-Furqan 25:24]
As for the mercy of Allah, which is His attribute, is it said that Allah is the settled place of this attribute? Rather, it is said that Allah is described with this attribute, and it is not said that He is the settled place for it. Because if you said that He is the settled place for it, it would necessitate that the attribute is a thing that stands on its own and settles in something else, and this is not correct. Rather, the settled place of His mercy is His Paradise. Did this one who said it not know that Allah the Exalted said regarding Paradise:
You are only My Mercy by means of which 1 shall show mercy to those whom I wish أنت رحمتي أرحم بك من أشاء
Sahih Muslim 2846a
So there is no harm in a person saying, "May Allah gather me and you in the settled place of His mercy." I ask Allah to gather me and you in the settled place of His mercy.

The questioner : Ameen

The Shaykh : Yes
