What is the ruling on wearing the engagement ring at the time of the proposal?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the ruling on wearing what is called the engagement ring in the proposal?

The Shaykh : What is this engagement ring?

The questioner : The ring.

The Shaykh : The ring? Okay, just a plain ring?
The student: The marriage contract is not finalized unless this ring is placed.

The Shaykh : Yes. In any case, if this is accompanied by a belief or ignorance, it is not permissible. As for the belief, some people say: He takes the ring and writes the wife's name on it. And the wife takes a ring from the husband and writes the husband's name on it. They claim that as long as this ring with the wife's name is on the husband, and as long as the ring with the husband's name is on the wife, the bond between them is confirmed. And if this ring is removed, divorce is near. This is a false belief. It is not permissible. Also, if this engagement ring is worn by the suitor and his fiancée before the marriage contract, this is forbidden because the woman before the marriage contract is a stranger to the husband. For this reason, it is not permissible for the suitor to talk to his fiancée on the telephone. Some people say, "I talk to her on the telephone so I can know the extent of her culture." What is this talk? He knows the extent of her culture when he enters her home, but he takes pleasure in addressing her and talking to her and enjoys it. This is the reality, whereas saying "I look at the extent of her culture" is deception and lying. So in any case, if this ring is not accompanied by a belief or a blameworthy act, it is a ring like any other ring. Yes.
